Aha! The Trossachs. HV Morton in his book 'In Search of Scotland' (a classic manual for nostalgic travellers, even today) said it best. He was describing how he had travelled widely seeking some kind of essential Scotland. He found it in the Trossachs and apparently was none too pleased. By Loch Katrine he discovered: the whole thing in concentrated form, boiled down to the very essence…..they are definitely unfair and should be abolished in the interests of more distant places'.

Probably he stood at the spot this print portrays. Visitors have climbed the little knoll above the Duke's Road for generations.

As for the original painting, this is all gouache with some water-colour pencil details, some scratching out with a pen-knife and a spatter of paint from an old tooth-brush. Yes, the Trossachs in autumn come quite near to goldy-redy-orangey-russety overload. Bonnie though...
