North Uist and big skies.
This is definitely somewhere near the top end of the Uists! Honestly.

Well, this is a little bit embarrassing. A customer who had bought this print asked me where exactly this scene is, so I hunted through my diary and also the series of pics on which the painting is based. And I couldn't quite pin it down. I know we were north-bound for the ferry to Harris that spring day and it was near the end of the journey, but even with Google street view I couldn't quite match it up.
Still, I think it says 'North Uist'...you know, all that stuff about big skies and scattered dwellings set in the rolling green. (I have barely stopped myself going on about the interplay of sea-loch and land as well...it's so hard to give up when you've been a tourism material copywriter for years.)
Why the textured paper?
The original work was done on a Hahnemuhle textured paper; actually the last sheet as I had so much trouble spelling the brand (so many aitches) and got to preferring smooth paper anyway as per Arches and Daler Rowney. As this was done a few years back I have now forgotten the medium - watercolour by the look of it. The printer shows it up well, so I don't mind
Still, it worked out, as this is a steady seller. I blame the oystercatchers as much as the big skies. It's all very peaceful.
Where the North Uist Panorama actually is!
This is a kind of 'stop press' announcement. Another buyer asked where it was so I got serious...I realised that what I was looking at was an arm of the sea, not an inland loch. I knew we were Berneray-bound to catch the ferry to Harris. (Remember this was back in 2014!) I then plainly saw that the scene is looking north just after the right turn from the B893, way up north, that takes you on to the road to the ferry terminal.
The Ordnance Survey labels it as Port nan Long, which from memory means 'ship-harbour'. Google maps calls it Newtonferry, so you can take your pick. Anyway, I now know exactly what I painted! And, I know this is a bit wacky, but you can even order the North Uist panorama printed on a mug
